Using Digital Ballistics to Find the Smoking Camera
DoD Cyber Crime Conference, 2008
Digital ballistics is the science of matching an image back to the device that created it. The quantization tables from JPEG images can be used to determine information about the program or camera that last compressed the image. For our purposes, it could be used to demonstrate that an image has not been altered since it was captured by a camera. This presentation explains how JPEGs are made, how the tables vary between devices, and show how they can be used for ballistics purposes.
